Personal profile

Matthew Pell's moving-image work is concerned with an exploration of human identity in urban environments, city morphology, soundscape ecology and the juxtaposition of natural and manufactured forms.

Pell's practice-based research project Bridges is an ongoing exploration through single-authored moving image and sound of the manufactured structures that cross the River Soar on the Grand Union Canal in the suburban area of Leicester, England.

Since 2019 the project has developed into a series of video and sound works that explore an area called Aylestone Meadows where some of the bridges are located. Aylestone Meadows is a 22-acre nature reserve that is located on the edge of Leicester city centre.

With twenty-two years experience of video production, Pell has created both commissioned and self-initiated projects. Pell has collaborated with musicians, sound artists and theatre companies to produce projections for live performances, screenings in public spaces, music videos and video art.
