Personal profile

My career in experimental psychology has been largely spent fighting a formidable tyrant, the cognitive unconscious. Within a psychological science that embraces a mind outside our awareness, I seek to promote the marginalized conscious mind by exploring methods of valid introspective access to explanatory conscious contents. Using theory-driven analytic methods of verbal report, my work has demonstrated our awareness of controlling thoughts and resulting behavioural influences assumed to be unconscious cognitions by the prevailing dual-process architecture. Alone and with students, my work has uncovered the predictive validity of conscious contents in the domains of rule-based learning, repetition priming, self-esteem, environment-related attitudes, and the hindsight bias.
