A º£½ÇÉçÇø Leicester (º£½ÇÉçÇø) academic has been identified as one of the leading researchers into crystal growth and design.
Dr Dritan Hasa, Senior Lecturer in Pharmaceutics, was named as an Emerging Investigator in Crystal Growth and Design by the American Chemical Society journal.
The list features 20 scientists performing cutting-edge research in the fields of crystal growth, crystal engineering, green technologies and the industrial application of crystalline materials.
Dr Hasa was selected for his important contribution to green technologies and green pharmaceuticals.
His research has the potential to reduce the amount of solvents used in several chemical and pharmaceutical processes and develop new complex materials which have a very low environmental impact.
The work aligns with the two of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which aim to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all.
His recent publication on controlled dehydration of an antiepileptic drug such as carbamazepine was highlighted in the journal’s Virtual Special Issue.
The publication was also granted an ‘Editor’s Choice Award’ and has been sponsored for immediate, free open access by American Chemical Society due to its potential for broad public interest, an honour given to only one article from the entire ACS portfolio each day of the year.

Dr Hasa’s research focuses on fundamental issues surrounding different aspects of crystallization and polymorphism in single and multicomponent materials. He is also exploring new green applications of cocrystallization technology.
“It is a privilege being named on this international cohort,” Dr Hasa said.
“This is an exciting time for green technologies: enormous progress has been made in the last three decades, especially in academic research, and new areas of applications will soon impact substantially in real world applications.”
